Critics emphasize the touching, intimate nature of the story told in the film and the empathy with which Baumbach treats his heroes. Radek Folta from the Movies Room wrote in his review: I found myself at the end of this two-hour and fifteen-hour movie that I wanted it not to end at all, that the characters somehow managed to overcome their problems. That's why I wasn't alone when I quickly reached for my sunglasses when I left the cinema to hide the tears coming to my eyes.
