Dazzling debut of Mai Vitková, which premiered in 2014 at the Sundance Film Festival. The film tells the story of three generations of Bulgarian women in the last decade of the communist era and the first years of transformation. Intimacy is combined with universality here. It is visually sophisticated, perfectly executed, poured with magic and embellished with an absurd sense of humor, a moving story about the intricate relationship between the closest people, the right to self-determination, the need for freedom and love.
People's Republic of Bulgaria, 1979. Boriana is pregnant, but she does not want a child born in a communist country. Her only dream is to escape to the West. The unwanted daughter, however, comes into the world. Viktoria does not have a navel, because her mother did not even have her umbilical cord. She's doing great alone. She is proclaimed the Child of the Decade and, to the delight of ideologically involved grandmother, she becomes a symbol of the regime. He grows up in a conflict with Boriana, subordinating himself to his surroundings thanks to good relations with Todor Zhivkov himself, the leader of the country, who showers her with presents. When the system falls on November 10, 1989, and Zhivkov is arrested, Viktoria's life turns upside down. The new situation means that the fate of the mother and daughter are again intertwined, and the West turns out to be quite close.
